Civil Legal Aid and Advice for Asylum Seekers
If you are applying for asylum or subsidiary protection in Ireland, civil legal aid and advice can help you with your application. You can apply for legal services at any time but it is important to do so as soon as possible.
How do I apply for civil legal aid and advice to help with an asylum or subsidiary protection application
You will need to fill in an application form and return it to Smithfield Law Centre. We will check if you are eligible and arrange an appointment at one of our law centres that deal with applications for asylum and subsidiary protection.
What will legal aid cover?
Civil legal aid and advice will assist you with your applications for asylum or subsidiary protection and appeal to the Refugee Appeals Tribunal.
Civil legal aid for an asylum application will not assist you with a judicial review of how the decision on your application was made but you might be able to get civil legal aid for that separately.
How much will it cost?
You will have to pay a contribution of €10 that covers both legal advice and, if you need it, legal aid.
I just want more information on applying for asylum in Ireland
You can find information on the process of applying for asylum in Ireland on the Citizens’ Information website.
We also have an information leaflet on the asylum process.
Anticipated changes to the international protection system in Ireland
Changes are expected take place to the international protection system in Ireland in late 2016. Instead of applying separately for asylum and subsidiary protection, a person will make a single application for international protection. The information on this page reflects the existing system in place prior to these changes.
