Independent Monitoring Committee for the Refugee Legal Service
Functions of the Independent Monitoring Committee
The Independent Monitoring Committee has a dual role;
> to ensure that a quality legal service is provided by the Refugee Legal Service; and
> to provide an independent forum to investigate complaints from customers of the Refugee Legal Service about the quality of the service they received.
Membership
The members of the Independent Monitoring Committee are appointed by the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform.
Complaints
A complaint may relate to a decision or action taken or not taken regarding the provision of legal services to an asylum seeker. It may relate also to the performance of staff of the Refugee Legal Service which is considered to be contrary to the generally accepted principles of good administration and which adversely affects the asylum seeker in exercising his or her right to legal assistance.
All complaints will be acknowledged by the Secretary and the outcome will be considered by the Committee and the result communicated to the Legal Aid Board, the complainant and the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform.
