Asylum Applications

Initial application for asylum

When you apply for asylum to the Office of the Refugee Applications Commissioner (ORAC), you must complete a questionnaire detailing your claim for asylum. You should complete this questionnaire yourself, as it is the factual basis for your claim for asylum and you are the best person to tell why you are claiming asylum. After you have submitted your questionnaire, ORAC will interview you. The RLS will provide you with information and advice about:
  • the asylum process;
  • the need for you to be truthful and to cooperate with ORAC;
  • your questionnaire; and
  • attending for interview with ORAC.
If you are, for example, a minor or otherwise vulnerable person, the RLS may provide assistance in completing the questionnaire and may attend with you at the interview.
