15. Can the risk of damage to the children be minimised?
The breakdown of a couple’s relationship can have a traumatic effect on children. What is critically important, in terms of the needs of the children, is the manner in which the process of separation is handled. Its importance cannot be overstated. If handled well, there will be considerably less trauma for the children. It is very important that you are sensitive to the needs and feelings of your children when making decisions that may affect their well-being. It is also important in terms of your children’s well-being that you and your spouse continue to have a relationship as parents, and that the parenting arrangements are designed to help to preserve all that is good in these relationships.
